How does femtosecond laser cataract surgery work?

Before cataract surgery, Dr. Gordon creates an extraordinarily detailed map of each eye using an optical coherence tomography, or OCT, system. This map is used to guide the femtosecond laser in making precise incisions in the optimal locations determined by Dr. Gordon. No handheld blade can match these laser-created incisions in terms of their precision. Each incision is uniform in its depth and free from the minutely jagged edges associated with incisions made with traditional surgical instruments.

In addition to making incisions, the femtosecond laser is also used to soften the cataract-affected lens prior to its being broken up into pieces and removed. This lowers the risk of incision burn and the accidental breakage of the capsule that holds the lens.

After the cataract has safely been suctioned out of the lens, it is replaced with the artificial lens, which restores clear vision. Many patients are able to achieve excellent unaided vision at all distances. Some are even able to bid farewell to their glasses and contact lenses altogether. The precision with which the IOL is placed increases the odds of their achieving crisp, clear unaided vision. Because the femtosecond laser improves precision at every stage of surgery, patients are that much more likely to emerge from the procedure with outstanding vision and decreased reliance on glasses or contact lenses.
