LASIK surgery is a great way to address refractive errors, allowing people to see clearly without the need of corrective lenses such as eyeglasses and contacts. The surgery has proven effective for millions worldwide, and it may be the right solution for you at our Pomona laser vision center. Right now, we'd like to focus on the LASIK recovery process. There are steps that should be followed at various stages of recovery, all of which are designed to ensure healing that is quick and free from complications.
Follow Our Instructions for Care to the Letter
Whether it's pre-operative care or post-operative care, it's imperative that patients follow the instruction provided to them by the practice. If you should have any questions or concerns before or during the recovery process, we encourage you to speak with a Pomona LASIK surgeon as soon as possible so that you can get the information that you need when you need it.
What to Expect the First Day After Surgery
In the first day after LASIK surgery, it's important that patients avoid reading, watching television or movies, using the computer, or engaging in any sort of activities that would put strain on the eyes. (This may be required for the first two days.) Instead, patients should just rest and relax their eyes.
Patients will be asked to wear sunglasses when outdoors or near any bright lights since the eyes will be especially sensitive during this time. Patients should not drink alcohol for at least the first 48 hours after surgery.
What to Expect the Days After Surgery
Patients will be asked to avoid taking showers for the first days after surgery in order to avoid water getting into the eyes. Baths should be taken instead. To wash the face, a damp washcloth will be used, but the patient must make sure to avoid the eye area. Pomona LASIK patients will also be asked to avoid using eye makeup and to avoid dusty or smoky places for at least a week after surgery.
What to Expect the First Week After Surgery
Within the first week after surgery, patient will visit their LASIK surgeon again for the first of several follow-up visits. These will be performed in order to monitor the progress of a patient's healing and to find out if there are any additional concerns patients have. Be sure to keep communication open with your surgeon. There are no silly questions when it comes to the health of your eyes and the quality of your eyesight.
The Weeks and Months Ahead
In the weeks and months after iLASIK surgery, patients will notice that their vision begins to normalize. These first weeks will give patients a chance to acclimate to their new vision. As the corneas heal, the vision will generally improve or even out. In most cases this means fewer issues with glare, halos, and night vision.
Since dry eye is a common side effect of LASIK for a few weeks, we recommend that patients have lubricating eye drops with them at all times. Having these liquid tears handy will allow patients to avoid eye irritation and discomfort wherever they go.
